The City Stadium complex covers an area of around 9.5 hectares. The construction of this venue – which hosts football matches and athletics meetings – was completed in 1938, and since then has witnessed a great many extraordinary sporting feats. The most famous Czech athlete of all time, Emil Zátopek, broke two 10,000-metre world records on this track, and the strong local tradition of track and field continues to this day with the prestigious annual Golden Spike Grand Prix. In recent years, this event has featured dozens of Olympic medallists and world record holders – the Jamaican Asafa Powell was the first sprinter to run 100 metres in under 10 seconds on a Czech track. Among the world-beating Czech athletes who have made their mark at the Golden Spike are Helena Fibingerová and Jarmila Kratochvílová.
