The history of Ostrava’s brewery dates back to 1842, when the first brewhouse, fermentation room, cellars and malt-house were built in what is now Pivovarská (‘Brewery’) Street in central Ostrava, near the Černá louka Exhibition Centre. The tenant of the brewery, Markus Strassmann, supplied beer mainly to German-owned pubs, however on 11 December, 1896 permission was granted to build a brewery which would supply Czech businesses.

The new brewery – on Hornopolní Street – was completed on 16 May, 1898. Visitors can take a tour of the brewery, seeing the various processes involved in making the local Ostravar beer. The tour starts in the brewhouse and continues through the fermentation room and lagering (maturation) tanks, the filtering plant, keg plant and bottling plant, finishing in the old brewhouse, where there is an interesting exhibition on brewing featuring an original serving bar that dates back over 60 years. At the end of the tour, visitors can sample some of the amber nectar for themselves.
