The Church Square (Kostelní naměstí) in the city centre is linked to nearby Masaryk Square by Kostelní Street. The square takes its name from the adjacent church of St Wenceslas, a unique example of 13th century architecture. Next to the church is the seat of the Ostrava-Opava bishopric, a modern building that was consecrated at an opening ceremony held on 11 February, 2000. Prior to the move, the original premises had been located on the second floor of the parish building on Monsignor Jan Šrámek Square since the foundation of the diocese. The new building features a statue of St Hedwig, patron saint of Silesia, above the entrance.
