Smetana Square

In the 19th century this square was dominated by the Antonín coal mine, after which the square was named Antonín Square. Today, however, the main landmark is the newly reconstructed Antonín Dvořák Theatre, one of the buildings belonging to the National Theatre of Moravia-Silesia. Next to the theatre is the unique former Brouk & Babka department store, dating from 1928 and designed by the renowned architect Karel Kotas. In 2001 the store was renovated and re-opened, and now houses Librex, the largest bookstore in the Czech Republic. The square used to be the terminus for an electric railway running to the nearby town of Karviná, and was also the site of a now demolished fire station where the first local radio broadcasts were made in 1929.
