The Dean Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary is the most important tabernacle in the town. It comes from the time of the town foundation, i.e. the second half of the 13th century and it was built by the so-called Písek-Zvíkov Construction Works just like the Písek castle and the bridge. In that time, the three-aisled church tightly pressed against the southern side of the town fortification, a cemetery spread out around it and the towers were equally high. One of them was raised in 1489. The columns separating the aisles are decorated with late Romanesque and early Gothic murals with the depiction of Christ, the Virgin Mary, St. John and St. James. A copy of the panel painting of the Písek Madonna from the 14th century (the original was stolen in 1975) hangs in an aisle. The St. John of Nepomuk chapel was added in the 18th century.
