In this place there used to be the Under the Cliff Grain Mill, likely connected with foundation of the neighbouring royal castle in the end of the 13th century. The king Vladislav Jagello granted the mill to the Písek Municipality in 1511. A pumping station supplying the town fountains and later houses with the river water was built on a small island next to the mill in 1836.
