Name of Písek town comes from the local gold-bearing sand therefore the museum presents a permanent exhibition of mining and processing of gold which was acquired by panning as well as by underground exploitation. One finds here a gold plate, one of the most beautiful gold pieces in the world, found by a farmer in a clod of earth in a field nearby Vodňany. The exposition shows panning instruments, archaeological discoveries depicting use of gold since prehistoric ages, a model of a gold ore mill, a miner’s lamp, grinding stones, documents concerning renewal of the gold mining in Písek region in the 18th century. Modern gold tradition represents annual competition in gold panning which the Museum holds the first Saturday in August by the Otava River in Kestřany.
