The city of Ostrava’s most popular recreational venue is its zoo, which was opened in 1951 and covers an area of 100 hectares. The zoo has almost 300 species of animals, and attracts both children and adults all year round. Visitors can see giraffes, zebras, elephants, hippopotamuses, chimpanzees, big cats, birds of prey, parrots, and many other interesting and beautiful animals. The site also includes a botanical garden with three walking routes for visitors. In the summer months, the zoo plays host to displays of falconry, while winter visitors can see the elephants being fed or, if conditions permit, enjoy cross-country skiing. Evening activities include guided tours and a range of accompanying events.
