With the size of 139 m x 193 m (456 x 633 feet), the square was one of the largest in Europe in the times of the foundation of the city. Three golden fountains were on the square installed lately. The fountains represents features of pilsner court of arms – the greyhound, the camel and the angel. The Plague Memorial was built in 1681 as an expression of the citizens’ thanks-giving for the relatively “mild” course of the last year’s plague epidemic. A replica of the Pilsen Madonna from the main altar of the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew is at the top of the column. Renaissance City Hall designed by the Italian master Giovanni de Statia and built in 1554 - 1559 is a real gem of Renaissance architecture. The square is the site of many social and cultural events and traditional markets.
