These old buildings have been carefully restored and now are in high demand. Many years ago, they were the most common solution for immigrants coming in Milan. The tenements allowed to share the everyday life: the courtyard was the kingdom of children playing. Each apartment opened onto a large room used for all the day's activities, and a second room was the bedroom. Usually, the bathroom was shared with other occupants. In the years of economic boom these houses were the cheapst solution, but today they are a choice. The areas around the canals have become trendy areas and those who choose to live here is generally very young (only 14% are over 40 years).
