The Cathedral of Novara, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, is an imposing neoclassical building designed by architect Alessandro Antonelli Novara, the same who designed the Mole in Turin and the dome of St. Gaudenzio in Novara. The Cathedral is located in the heart of the city, in the central Piazza della Repubblica, where once stood a Roman church of the eleventh century, demolished for the construction of the building of Antonelli between 1863 and 1869. The façade is preceded by a portico, under which there is access to the churchyard. The porch connects the building to the nearby Baptistery, the fifth century.
